Jonathan M. Walsweer, 38, died March 16 in Key Largo, Fla.

Helios was the name of his Boston Whaler. You may have seen him out on the water with his family or fishing with his boys.

Although Jon grew up in Westfield, N.J., he had a deep love for the Vineyard. He especially loved summers on the Island. As a teenager, Jon worked as a lifeguard on South Beach and was employed by Mattakesett and other businesses in Edgartown. If it was a sunny day, Jon was out on the water. His favorite spot to anchor with his family was Cape Pogue. He would set up the crab trap for his boys, swim with the current, go tubing and do cannonballs off the side of the boat. He loved to watch the fireworks from his boat. He also loved sailing and crewing with the Edgartown Yacht Club.

Jonathan recently earned his U.S. Coast Guard captain's license for a 50-gross-ton vessel capacity with a sailing endorsement.

On March 16, Jonathan died along with two friends while exploring a sunken navy ship, the Spiegel Grove, in Key Largo, Fla. He was a certified dive instructor who had a deep respect for the sport and the ocean.

Jonathan was a passionate, fun-loving person who was adored by his friends and family. Jonathan was a graduate of Stetson University, Fla. and was a financial advisor with Smith Barney.

Survivors include his wife, Regina; his sons, William, 6, and Nicholas, 5; his yellow lab, Tashmoo, 11; his mother and stepfather, Dorothy and Ernie Daman of Edgartown; his brother Chris; his grandfather, Mario Russo; his in-laws, Pat and Sam Muscarnera; and his extended family and friends.
