Anna Louise Correia Hoglund of Edgartown died on Oct. 8 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital with her family at her side after a brief illness. She was 97.
She was born on June 4, 1910 in Edgartown, the daughter of John L. and Mary Bettencourt Correia.
She was educated in the local schools and lived in Edgartown all of her life. As a child she lived on Cooke street and recalled how it was paved with scallop shells. In the past few years she felt all the new development was destroying the real character of the town.
She will be remembered for being kind, caring, and creative, always dedicated to family and friends. She possessed a great sense of humor and love of practical jokes. In the early 1930s, in concert with her two brothers John and Manuel, her husband Johan Axel Hoglund, and their good friend Eugene Gale, they executed an April Fools Day joke on the entire Island, which held the Vineyard in suspense for almost a week attracting attention from newspapers on and off the Island.
Anna was never idle and loved being a homemaker. Her interests included gardening, flower arranging, cooking, crocheting, sewing, and making over a hundred fine braided rugs for her home and friends. She enjoyed teaching others herskills.
Anna loved the holidays and assisted her husband, Axel (Jingles) as Santa Claus for the town of Edgartown for more than 40 years. Her love for animals, especially cats, led her to an endearing friendship with AnnaBell Washburn, one of the founders of the Pet Adoption and Welfare Agency, commonly known as PAWS.
Anna was predeceased by her husband, Johan Axel Hoglund, her sister Mary Medeiros and her brothers Manuel and John L. Correia.
Survivors include two daughters, Judith Bruguiere and her husband Robert of Edgartown and Joan Hoglund-Coward and her husband Jay Coward of Ben Lomond, Calif.; six grandchildren, W. Erik Bruguiere, Nancy Bruguiere Morris, Suzanne Bruguiere and Seymour, Alyson and Arianna Coward; and five great-grandchildren.
A service for family and friends at the Westside Cemetery in Edgartown will be held on a date to be announced. Memorial gifts may be sent in her name to PAWS, P.O. Box 1636, Edgartown, MA 02539; Windemere Nursing and Rehabilitation Center, P.O. Box 1747, Oak Bluffs, MA 02557; or to the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, P.O. Box 1310, Edgartown MA 02539.
