William J. Nicholson 3rd (Bill) died unexpectedly at home on Oct. 2.

Bill was born in Plymouth, N.C., and raised in Kinston, N.C., spending his summers at Morehead City with his sisters. Bill cherished his family growing up and maintained close contact with his siblings.

He attended Granger Community College and upon graduation enlisted in the Air Force.

Bill was a southern gentleman through and through and he relished sharing stories of his years in North Carolina and in the Air Force. He was an avid sportsman in fishing and hunting; but his greatest passion was Civil War history. He attended and participated in many shows and marched in parades here on the Vineyard, representing those who gave their lives in that war.

His faith in his Lord took many forms on Martha’s Vineyard, as an elder of a church, a man amongst the people and one in search of truth, always understanding it was a personal relationship with his Lord Jesus Christ. He taught us all lessons through his stories and anecdotes.

Bill will be missed by all who knew him. He was a unique person who brought joy and comfort to many. He was a loyal friend and his individuality shone like a bright light. He will live long in our hearts.

Bill leaves behind his wife of almost 19 years Jo-Anne; his five children Will, Caleb and his wife Melissa, their son Wyatt and another child on the way. Meghan, Jared and his wife Rhian with daughter Jaelyn Marie and Jesse. Bill also leaves behind three sisters Mary, Peggy, and Molly and many nieces and nephews which include the McCarthy and Fragosa clans. He was predeceased by his first wife, Pegi Nicholson.

Donations may be made in his memory to: Veterans of America, Vietnam Vet, 8605 Cameron street, Suite 400, Silver Springs, MD 20910.
