John C. Nevin died Friday, Nov. 30 at the Henrietta Brewer House in Vineyard Haven. He was 86.

Mr. Nevin was born in 1921 at his family’s home on Winter street in Edgartown. He spent his entire life in Edgartown aside from his service in World War II. In the service, he became a prisoner of war. He survived not only this experience in Germany but also fought in Normandy. He returned to his home in 1945.

He married his high school sweetheart, Mary Jane Smith of Vineyard Haven. Together they had four children. John was predeceased by his wife in 1987, and by his son Jack in 1987.

John was a real estate appraiser, a volunteer firefighter and a doting father to his four children, whom he adored.

He was an avid reader, photographer and a finder of treasures with his metal detector. He will be most remembered for his quick wit and wry humor.

Survivors include his loving companion and confidante, Polly Ann Emin; three daughters, Anne Nevin of West Tisbury, Nancy C. Nevin of Williams-town and Mary Jane Nevin of Beacon Hill; and many grandchildren, nieces and nephews. He will be missed by all who knew him.

A funeral service is scheduled for noon today, Friday, Dec. 7 at St. Andrew’s Church in Edgartown. The Rev. Robert Edmunds will officiate. A gathering of family and friends will be held in the parish hall immediately following the service. Interment will be private. Donations may be made to the Vineyard chapter of the American Red Cross, or to a charity of one’s choice.
