William Cary Sibert, 86, of Raleigh, N.C., died at the home of his daughter, Jane Colby McManus, on Dec. 13, surrounded by his wife Jessie and family.

Bill was born at Fort Sill, Okla., on July 30, 1921, the second of three children. He was a third-generation graduate of the United States Military Academy, graduating from West Point in 1945. He served 27 years in the U.S. Army, from which he retired as a colonel in 1972. His postings included Japan, where he was assigned during the post-war reconstruction period; Korea, where he fought at Pork Chop Hill as a company commander and received the Bronze Star; and Viet Nam, where he commanded the 52nd Aviation Battalion and received nine air medals and the Distinguished Flying Cross. His final tour was as military attache to the U.S. Embassy in Lima, Peru.

Upon retirement, Bill entered Episcopal Theological Seminary in Cambridge and was ordained an Episcopal priest in 1974. He served as a parish priest in Boston from 1974 to 1980, and as the rector of Holy Trinity Church in Fayetteville, N.C., from 1980 to 1986. Upon retirement, Bill and Jessie moved to Wilmington, N.C., and then to Raleigh to be closer to their children.

Bill was an avid water color painter throughout his career and in retirement. He exhibited in Wilmington and the Vineyard, where the family has a summer home.

Survivors include his wife, Jessie; his sons, Will, Alan and John; and his daughter, Jane Colby McManus.

Bill will be buried at Arlington National Cemetery. A memorial service had been scheduled for Dec. 20, at St. Michael’s Episcopal Church in Raleigh.
