Lloyd Michael Mayhew, a resident of Chilmark, Vineyard Haven, Fairhaven, and Mattapoisett and more recently of Melbourne, Fla., died Jan. 4. He was 86.

He was born at home in Chilmark on April 9, 1921, the son of Walter H. and Doris Flanders Mayhew of Chilmark.

He attended the Chilmark and Tisbury schools, and was a disabled veteran of World War II, during which he served in the Marine Corps.

Mr. Mayhew was a well-known Vineyarder, living in Vineyard Haven most of his life. After the Marine Corps, he worked as an installer for New England Telephone and Telegraph Company for many years, and then worked for and retired from Vineyard Ford/Lincoln/Mercury as general manager.

He enjoyed golf, boating and fishing. In his spare time, he also designed commercial buildings, built several homes, and created beautiful furniture. He was an excellent craftsman throughout his life.

Survivors include his wife Hilda of Fairhaven; his children, Jeanne Gravley of Viera, Fla., Melinda Lock of Melbourne, Fla. L. Michael Mayhew of Norwell and Thomas W. Mayhew of Vineyard Haven; seven grandchildren, Kenneth, Kurt, Kelly, Kaylee, Eric, Amanda and Anna; and six great-grandchildren, Kristin, Cynthia, Brennan, Stevie, Brodie and Abbigail. He was predeceased by his brothers, Paul and Elliot, and his sisters, Marian, Ella and Gail.

A graveside service, to be announced at a later date, will be held at Oak Grove Cemetery, Vineyard Haven.
