Joseph Nunes, 97, of Oak Bluffs died at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital on Jan. 8. He was born in Oak Bluffs on August 1, 1910.

Joe served for 42 years with the Oak Bluffs fire department. He was also part of the group that planned and built the Portuguese-American Club 75 years ago. He remained active in the club as past president and as past mordon of the annual Holy Ghost Feast.

Survivors include his companion of 35 years, Katherine (Kaye) Manning and her family: Joan and her husband Wayne Cobb of Bridgewater, Marilyn Manning of Byfield, W. Richard Manning of Oak Bluffs and the late Kathy Maseda, grandchildren Ryan Cobb, Caitlin Goodhile, Emily Manning, Daniel Manning, and Brendan Maseda, and great-grandchildren Maddy and Zack; his sister, Mary Ross and her husband Ray Ross of Zephyrhills, Fla.; and a special niece, Marlene Fraser of California.

Joe also is survived by his extended P.A. Club family whom he loved so much.

Visiting hours will be held today, Friday, Jan. 18 at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, Oak Bluffs from 6 to 8 p.m. A graveside service will be held on Saturday, Jan. 19 at 11 a.m. at Sacred Heart Cemetery, Vineyard avenue, Oak Bluffs followed by a gathering of family and friends at the Portuguese American Club.
