Mary Elizabeth (Molly) Shugrue died Jan. 7 in Los Angeles, Calif., of cardiac arrest from complications of schizophrenia and bipolar disorder. She was the daughter of Edward and Page Hurley Shugrue of Duxbury.

Born on August 22, 1981, Molly grew up on Boston’s Beacon Hill and spent every summer with her grandmother, the late Miriam Greene Hurley, at her Chilmark home, Kettle Cove Point.

One summer, Molly and her sister Rosie sold their own hand-painted and decorated furniture at the Chilmark Flea Market. Other summers, they joined their sister Hillary and worked together at the Broken Arrow Cafe at the Gay Head Cliffs.

Molly attended the Josiah Quincy Elementary School in Chinatown. After several years at Boston Latin School, she graduated from the Dublin School in Dublin, N.H., where she was class valedictorian. At Skidmore College, Molly roomed with Aretha Witham of Aquinnah and pursued her studies until the onset of her illness. She then transferred to the School of the Museum of Fine Arts in Boston. Last winter, she moved to Los Angeles, Calif., where she lived independently and continued her art.

At the Josiah Quincy School, Molly was a member of the Chinese Dance Troupe, the Boston Ballet scholarship class, and the computer team, winning first place in the citywide Logo-writing competition. She was a member of the Boston Latin School/Museum of Fine Arts Honor Program, when two of her paintings were exhibited at the museum and later recognized by a juried art show. Molly was one of 50 students chosen to participate in the Boston Public Schools/University of Massachusetts writing program, where she became a mentor-in-training and helped young people learn to write. At Dublin School, she starred as Frenchy in Grease and Lewis in Pippin, while completing four advanced placement courses in biology, chemistry, calculus, and English, in which she earned a perfect five score.

Molly was the sister of Rosamond (Rosie) Page Shugrue of West Tisbury, Hillary Greene Shugrue of Los Angeles, Calif., Whitney Shugrue Hermann of Arlington Heights and Edward L. Shugrue 3rd of New York city. She leaves aunt and uncles Nancy Mae and Donald Hurley Jr. and Stephen Nash Hurley of New York and Quitsa Mooring, Chilmark; and cousins Courtney, Kimberly, Nash, Patricia, and William, all of New York and Chilmark. She also leaves two nephews and many other aunts, uncles and cousins.

In addition to the late Mrs. Hurley, she was the granddaughter of the late Donald J. Hurley of Weston and Quitsa Mooring, Chilmark, and the late Edward and Mary Elizabeth Shugrue of Milton.

A Boston memorial service will be held in late March or early April. Interment will be private.
