Maureen Campbell-Korves died Jan. 8 at Calvary Hospital in the Bronx, N.Y.
She was a civil rights activist, disability advocate, past president of the New York State Head Injury Foundation and two-term member of the Governor’s Commission on Disabilities. She attended Fordham and Columbia universities.
She was instrumental in the passage of the landmark Americans with Disabilities Act, the New York state Seat Belt Law and Helmet Law, and revised medical reimbursement regulations for survivors in New York state. She was featured in the film, Head Injury — The Silent Epidemic. She also was steward to families of children with learning disabilities.
She was a loving mother, cherished daughter and spouse, aunt and mentor to family and friends. Her passions were family, reading and knitting.
She was a longtime summer resident of the Vineyard, receiving multiple blue ribbons and citations for numerous coats, sweaters, scarves and hats knitted with love for families and friends.
Maureen loved New York city and the solace of the open spaces and waters of the Vineyard. She often said, “Manhattan takes my breath away, the Vineyard gives it back.”
