Samuel Storey died Feb. 7 at home in San Francisco, Calif., the day after his 91st birthday.

Sam was born on Feb. 6, 1917. He grew up in Newark N.J., the son of Russian immigrants. He was the first in his extended family to attend college, graduating from the University of Wisconsin at Madison. After serving in the U.S. Army during World War II, he attended Harvard Law School, graduating in 1948. On a weekend trip to the Vineyard in 1952, he met his future wife, Sylvia Lisberger. They were married in 1953 and moved to her native San Francisco, where he established a private law practice.

Sam was a brilliant and memorable character who could hold forth with equal passion on W.H. Auden, the current stock market, Democratic politics, the feats and foibles of his five children, and the best way to make kugel (his mother’s way, of course.) Since 1964, Sam and his family spent every summer in Chilmark. His children and grandchildren also grew to love the Island, spending summers in the family home off State Road.

Sam’s greatest pleasures were browsing at the Chilmark library, shopping at the farmers’ market and Morning Glory, walking on the docks at Menemsha, attending events at the Martha’s Vineyard Hebrew Center, picking out the freshest catch at Larsen’s Fish Market, and shmoozing on Squibnocket beach with his many close friends.

Survivors include his wife, Sylvia; children Kim, Jill, Joan, Meg and Ted; and grandchildren Rachel and Daniel Katz, Kate and Ry Storey-Fisher, Alexa Storey, Sara and Talia Storey Cuddeback, and Ella, Abe and Nathan Storey. He is also survived by his sister Rose Wallach, nephew Steve Lisberger and family, many other nieces and nephews, and his devoted caregivers Martha Wong, Jorge Miranda and Dwain Ah-Tong.
