Edith Gellis Kopans of Falmouth, Me., formerly of Newton Centre, the Vineyard and Sarasota, Fla., died Feb. 13.

Born in Claremont, N.H., Mrs. Kopans was the daughter of Minnie and Morris Gellis.

She graduated from Radcliffe College in 1938 and was married the same year to the late Dr. David E. Kopans. After raising their children, Mrs. Kopans and her husband sailed the coast of New England. In the various places in which she lived, she was a member of the Sandy Bay Yacht Club, the Harvard Club of Boston, the Martha’s Vineyard Garden Club, the Harvard Club of Sarasota, the U.S. Power Squadron and Mended Hearts of Sarasota.

Mrs. Kopans and her husband came to the Vineyard as summer residents in 1979. Dr. Kopans died in 1980 while racing with the Holmes Hole Racing Association. Mrs. Kopans stayed on the Vineyard and enjoyed the beauty and peace of the Island until 2003.

She leaves two daughters, Emily R. Kopans of Falmouth, Me., and Elizabeth Steffensen and her husband Jon of Waban; a son, Dr. Daniel Kopans and his wife, Barbara, of Waban; and her grandchildren, Matthew and his wife Dana, Andrew, Adams, David and Michael.

She was the mother of the late twins, Donald and Ezekiel.

Funeral services were private.
