John R. (Bob) Metell of Bourne, formerly of Falmouth, died Feb. 25 at Bourne Manor. He was 80.

He was the husband of the late Teresa M. Lynch Metell, who died in March 1999.

Born in Oak Bluffs, he was son of the late Fred and Mary Jane Cardoza Metell.

John was a U.S. Army veteran who served in Japan during the Korean War. He worked for the state Department of Marine Fisheries for many years until his retirement.

John was a volunteer call firefighter for the Town of Falmouth for many years. He was a communicant of St. Anthony’s Church in East Falmouth. He enjoyed hunting, fishing and playing cards. He also dressed as Smokey the Bear at many Falmouth events and parades.

Survivors include two stepsons, Thomas A. Murray and John J. Murray Jr., both of East Falmouth, and two stepdaughters, Elizabeth Gossington of East Falmouth and Diedre A. Klassen of Valencia, Calif.

A funeral Mass will be celebrated at 1 p.m. today, Friday, Feb. 29 at St. Anthony’s Church, East Falmouth. Burial will follow in the Veterans Administration National Cemetery of Massachusetts in Bourne. Visiting hours will be from 11 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. today, Friday at the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, Falmouth.
