Marion Lair Woods died March 3 in Naples, Fla., after a very full life.

Marion was born on June 26, 1923 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital to the late Carlton P. and Ann Lair of Vineyard Haven.

Marion was predeceased by her husband of 58 years, Walter C. Woods Sr.

She graduated from the Tisbury High School and went on to Boston’s Beauty School for Hair Dressing. Upon completion of beauty school she worked for Elizabeth Rogers in Vineyard Haven.

Marion and Walter were married in 1948. Together they owned and operated the Mansion House, the Motor Inn, The Vineyard Villa, and Woods Causeway Apartments. Upon their retirement in 1977, they moved to Naples, Fla., although they often made their way back up the coast to spend the summers on the Vineyard, with their numerous friends and ever-growing and extending family.

Her last visit to the Island was last June, with her ever-faithful walking companion, a Boston Terrier named Kappy. She spent two months on the Island after Walter’s memorial service.

She spent her summer days going to lunch or dinner with friends, going for walks with Kappy, and waiting for her great-grandchildren to pop in for a visit. She was also able to be a part of the Baptism of her three great-grandchildren — she was so proud.

A favorite pastime of Marion’s was sewing. Before she lost most of her vision to macular degeneration, she was an avid seamstress. She loved to make a new dress or a new skirt for herself as well as a matching tie for Walter. They always went out on the town wearing matching outfits. Marion also enjoyed crocheting and knitting afghans and throws. Marion also loved watching videos of her grandchildren and great-grandchildren skating.

Survivors include her son, Walter C. Woods Jr. and his wife Linda, and a son, Eric C. Woods and his companion Patty; her three grandchildren, Julie A. Woods Meader and her husband Jared, Carlton L. Woods and Diana L. Woods; her great-grandchildren, Hailey Lynne, Hunter Clayton, and Savannah Ann Meader; and last but not least, she is survived and missed dearly by her dog, Kappy.

A memorial service will be held at a later date. In lieu of flowers, donations may be made in her name to the Massachusetts Commission for the Blind; the Macula Vision Research Foundation: Five Tower Bridge, 300 Barr Harbor Dr. Suite 600 West Conshohocken, PA 19428-2984 or at mvrf.org/donate; or the Island Ice Skating School, (run by her granddaughters Julie and Diana) P.O.
