Richard Horton Howes died March 11 in King of Prussia, Pa., following a lengthy illness.

Mr. Howes was born in New Bedford on Feb. 10, 1935. He grew up in Vineyard Haven and was the son of Nell and Ted Howes.

Richard attended the Tisbury School, Carson Long Military Institute in Pennsylvania, and the Sullivan School in Washington, D.C. He was appointed to the United States Military Academy, West Point, N.Y., from which he graduated in 1957.

He served 10 years as a Signal Corps Officer, being stationed in Germany and Korea, before leaving the Army to pursue a master’s degree in education. He graduated from the University of Hartford and taught for two years before taking a position with Western Union in New York, N.Y. He subsequently moved to King of Prussia, Pa., to accept a position with General Electric.

He was a frequent visitor to the Vineyard to see family and friends.

He was predeceased by his parents and brothers Robert and Ted.

Survivors include his sisters, Mary Bourgult of North Carolina, Dora Edwards of Tucson, Ariz., and Martha Doane of West Tisbury; and many nieces and nephews.

He will be interred at the United States Military Academy, West Point, N.Y.
