Carol Louise Van der Veer of Vineyard Haven died April 19 in Boston following a prolonged illness. She was 53.

Carol was born in Detroit and spent her childhood in Birmingham and Ann Arbor, Mich., summering on Chappaquiddick. She received a bachelor’s degree in art history from the University of California at Santa Barbara in 1976. She became a permanent resident of the Vineyard in 1980 after periods spent residing in California and Boston.

Carol will be remembered by all who knew her for her vivacious, fun-loving personality and warm, friendly nature. She was a lover of the arts and fashion and was devoted to her home and garden. Most of all, she will be remembered for the large number of friends and admirers she leaves on the Vineyard and across the country.

She was a daughter of the late Robert and Joan Van Derveer, and sister of the late Sarah Ryan of Rochester, N.Y.

Survivors include her son Schuyler Wuerth of Guildford, Conn.; siblings Mark of Portland, Ore., and Stephen of Natick; dear friend Bob Saggese of Vineyard Haven; nieces and nephews; and many, many friends.

A memorial service on the Vineyard will be held in the summer on a date to be announced.
