Charles Dominic Marinelli of Oak Bluffs died April 12 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston after a lengthy illness. He was 73.

Charley was born in Oak Bluffs on April 27, 1934, and was the son of William Bernadino and Annie Enos Martin Marinelli and brother of William Marinelli who predeceased him. His father and uncle, Dominick Marinelli, were born in Cocullo, Italy.

Charley graduated from Taunton Public Elementary School and went to work for his family. He married Linda Frizado Marinelli on March 25, 1961, and enjoyed 48 years of married life.

Mr. Marinelli was a farmer and fisherman and owned a fish market and bought scallops from the Island fishermen. When he retired from farming, he sold the 16-acre farm to the land bank for all Islanders to enjoy as he did and loved it. After the sale of the farm, he closed the fish market and completed his full retirement.

Later he struggled with lung cancer and won that battle for 25 years. He purchased his home on Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road and lived there until his death.

Charles was the father of two children, Diane Habekost and Charlene Maciel and her husband Tim and a loving father to his stepdaughter, Sandra Ann Roddy. He was the grandfather of Shannon, David and Suzanne Roddy, all of Cape Cod, and Timmy and Tyler Maciel of the Island.

He was a self-educated person. His knowledge was endless and he passed on much of this to his children. He was a very quiet person who most of his life kept to himself. He was a patient and dedicated father and stepfather. His family will miss him forever.

He is also survived by his sister-in-law Fay Landers Marinelli, his niece, Tina Marinelli and his great-nephews David and Ryan Marinelli who live in Oak Bluffs.

His funeral was held on April 19 in Our Lady Star of the Sea Church. Interment was in Sacred Heart Cemetery in Oak Bluffs. Donations may be made to St. Jude’s Cancer Research, P.O. Box 1893, Memphis TN 38101-9950.
