William Sample Barrack Jr. of New Canaan, Conn., and the Vineyard, died April 17.
He was born on July 26, 1929, in Pittsburgh, Pa., son of the late William Sample and Edna Henderson Barrack of Monroe County, Va., and Pittsburgh, Pa., respectively.
After graduating from Langley High School, Pittsburgh, Pa., he attended the University of Pittsburgh and graduated in 1950 with a bachelor’s degree in engineering.
At the outbreak of the Korean War, he volunteered and received a commission as an ensign in the U.S. Navy. He attended the Naval Postgraduate School, Monterey, Calif., and served aboard the U.S.S. Knapp in the Atlantic and Sixth Fleets. He withdrew from active duty in June 1953, but remained on active reserve until July 1989, when he retired with the rank of commander, U.S. Naval Reserve.
In July 1953, Mr. Barrack joined Texaco’s U.S. marketing organization. During the next 40 years, Mr. Barrack lived in the United States and abroad and worked in various capacities to become the chairman and chief executive officer of Texaco Ltd. in London, England.
He returned to the United States in 1982 as president of worldwide supply and trading, senior vice president, and senior director of Caltex Petroleum Corp., operating throughout the eastern Mediterranean, Africa, Asia and the Pacific Basin.
After his retirement from Texaco in 1993, he served as a director of Standard Commercial Corp., Consolidated Natural Gas Co., and Dominion Resources, Inc. He also served as a director of The International Executive Service Corp., and The Foreign Policy Association. For nine years, he served as a trustee of Manhattanville College, N.Y., and vice chairman of the board.
Mr. Barrack was a founder of The Naval War College Foundation and a member of the board of visitors of the School of Engineering, University of Pittsburgh, Pa. He is the recipient of the Distinguished Alumni Award and the Bicentennial Medallion from the university. He was a member of St. Mark’s Episcopal Church, New Canaan, Conn., The Woodway Country Club, Darien, Conn., The Clambake Club, Newport, R.I., and the New York Yacht Club, N.Y.
On Sept. 12, 1953, Mr. Barrack married the former Evelyn Irene Ball of Newport, R.I. Above all, he was a devoted husband, a loving father and grandfather.
Survivors include his wife; his son, William Peter Barrack and his wife, Katherine Winn of Wellesley, and their sons William Wilkinson and John Noble, and their daughter Jennifer Winn; and his daughter, Elizabeth Barrack Howells and her husband, Henry Coggeshall Howells 4th, of Richmond, Va., their daughter, Alexandra Irene, and their son, William Coggeshall; his sister, Ruth Barrack Kelly of Hudson, Ohio; and his brother, R. Dale Barrack of Kingwood, Tex.
William Sample Barrack Jr. always will be remembered for his love for his family and friends, his dogs, the great outdoors, and the sea. He was truly a remarkable man of honor and principle, compassion and grace.
