Dorothy Jenney McIntire of Berlin, Conn., and West Tisbury, died July 20 in Berlin, having celebrated her 100th birthday in March.

The only child of Rebecca Vincent Jenney and Walter Jenney, she was born on March 29, 1908, at home in Vineyard Haven. She attended Dukes County Academy and graduated as valedictorian from Tisbury High School. She was an accomplished soloist and pianist, often playing and singing at community and church events. Dorothy was one of the founding members of the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital Auxiliary.

She graduated from Framingham Normal School with a four-year degree and taught household arts, English and ancient history in the Edgartown school system for several years.

Married in 1933 to Nelson L. McIntire, she moved to his home town of Hopkinton. They celebrated their 50th anniversary before he died in 1984.

Dorothy never outgrew her love of the Vineyard. She often submitted poetry about the Island to the Vineyard Gazette. Through the years Dot (as she was often called) sang in various church choirs and ecumenical choruses. Her strong faith found her very involved in the Hopkinton Congregational Church. In later years, she moved to Berlin, Conn., to be with her daughter. She was a member of the Berlin Congregational Church in Berlin, Conn.

Survivors include a son, Frank N. McIntire and his wife, Juna McIntire of New Providence, N.J.; and a daughter, Carol I. Christensen and husband David G. Christensen of West Tisbury; two grandsons, David G. Christensen 3rd and his wife Alicia of West Tisbury, and Eric N. Christensen and his wife Samantha of Trumbull, Conn.; and four great-grandchildren: Dominic, Katarina, and Baylen, children of Eric and Samantha, and Aidan, son of David and Alicia.

She was predeceased by her husband, Nelson L. McIntire, and a great-grandson, Daniel Christensen.

A memorial service will be held Friday, August 1, at 10:30 a.m. at the Berlin Congregational Church, 878 Worthington Ridge, Berlin Conn., followed by a graveside service at 3:30 p.m. at Mount Auburn Street Cemetery, Hopkinton.
