Diane Lewis Greene died peacefully on Sept. 13 at her home in West Tisbury after a brave battle against ALS.

She was born August 22, 1944, and raised in Pittsford, N.Y., where she spent happy childhood summers driving powerboats on Canandaigua Lake. A graduate of Wells College, she loved her work as a social policy researcher at Abt Associates Inc, always welcoming friends and family into her home. Most of all, she treasured caring for her three daughters, whom she raised in Providence, R.I., Concord and West Tisbury.

Diane’s true home was on the Vineyard, where she spent more than 40 summers enjoying walks on the beach, gardening and cooking delicious meals with local produce. She moved to the Vineyard year-round in 2007.

She is survived by Foster C. Greene Jr., her husband of 37 years, daughters Katherine F. Greene, Abigail Greene Goldman, and Margaret C. Greene, and her granddaughter Mira Lewis Goldman, who was born this August on Diane’s 64th birthday. She will also be remembered lovingly by her mother, Elizabeth L. Lewis, her sister, Elizabeth L. Small, her brother, Donald M. Lewis 3rd and their families.

Friends are invited to a memorial service on Friday, Sept. 19 at 3 p.m. at St. Andrew’s Church in Edgartown, and to a celebration of her life following the service at the Greene home, 24 Alex Way, Nat’s Farm, West Tisbury.

In lieu of flowers, Diane would be honored by donations to the Vineyard Nursing Association, the staff of which helped Foster take wonderful care of her at home this past year.
