Janet Cutting Feldman died peacefully in her sleep on Nov. 6, with her daughters Diane Feldman of Washington, D.C., and Jane Feldman of Denver, Colo., at her side.

A longtime resident of Chilmark, she is also survived by her son, Geoffrey Feldman, her former husband Justin Feldman and her brother George Cutting of Bend, Ore.

She was born in Grand Junction, Colo. on Sept. 10, 1920, and attended the University of Colorado in Boulder. During World War II she worked for the War Labor Board in Washington, D.C. After the war, she moved to New York and did graduate work at the Cornell School of Industrial Labor Relations.

She was the assistant to the director of the Citizens’ Committee for Children in New York city, and was the director of labor relations for the Department of Transportation during the administration of New York Mayor John V. Lindsay.

In her later years, Janet was active in the University for Peace, a nongovernmental organization affiliated with the United Nations, and several other organizations which promoted the rights of women and indigenous peoples and world peace.

She loved the Vineyard and spent many hours paddling her kayak on Squibnocket Pond, bird watching at Black Point Pond and beach, and enjoying the natural beauty of the Island.
