Willard P. Schneible died on Nov. 30 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital. He was 87 and had been a resident of Windemere for the last three years.
He was born and lived in Rome, N.Y., until 1992 when he retired to Niceville, Fla. He earned an engineering degree from Carnegie Mellon University and a graduate degree in business administration from Tulane University. He entered the Navy in World War II as a lieutenant and fought in both the Atlantic and Pacific theatres as an LST commander. After the war he returned to Rome where he worked for Rome Cable Corp. for 37 years. He held many positions, the last being director of manufacturing and engineering. He was a member of the Tuegega Country Club, the Rome Club, Rome Yacht Club, The Society for the Advancement of Management and the Elks Club. He served on the boards of the Rome Hospital, Rome City Laboratory, Mohawk Valley Sheltered Workshop, Mohawk Valley Community College and The United Way.
He was predeceased by his wife Florence Dunn Schneible. He is survived by his daughter and son in law Patricia and Geoffrey Banfield of Vineyard Haven; his grandson and wife Duncan and Kelsey Banfield of New York city; his great-granddaughter Daphne Banfield; a sister Gretchen Bacon of Old Saybrook, Conn. and many nieces and nephews.
A private memorial service will be held at a later date.
