George B. Santos of Falmouth, formerly of Easton, died Monday, Dec. 15 at Epoch Senior Healthcare of Harwich. He was 83 and was the husband of Sally Frances Higgins Santos of Falmouth.

Born in Oak Bluffs, he was the only child of Manuel Vetro Santos Jr. and Mary B. Swartz Santos, and the stepson of Anne M. Dever Santos.

George was raised in Edgartown and graduated early from Edgartown High School to enlist in the U.S. Navy. A fire controlman 3rd class aboard the USS San Jacinto, Pacific Fleet, during World War II, he was honorably discharged and returned home to the Island, where he met his future wife of 55 years.

Settling in Easton to raise their six boys, he worked 23 years for the U.S. Postal Service, was also a union steward and worked a part-time sales position at Robinson’s Home Appliance in Brockton until his retirement in 1988. He was a parishioner of the Immaculate Conception Church.

Making his summer home in Falmouth permanent, he enjoyed life on the Cape; he loved animals, reading, big band music and watching his favorite Boston sports teams.

In addition to his wife, he is survived by six sons, Jason of Harwich, Joel of Marstons Mills, Christopher of Metairie, La., Joslin of East Bridgewater, Jeremy of Huntingdon, Pa., Justin of Falmouth; as well as 14 grandchildren and 10 great-grandchildren.

A funeral mass will be celebrated Saturday, Jan. 3 at noon at St. Patrick’s Church on Main street in Falmouth. Interment will be in the Massachusetts National Cemetery in Bourne on Tuesday, Jan. 6 at 1 p.m.
