Dr. Kenneth Levy Zierler, professor emeritus of medicine and of physiology, and a physician at Johns Hopkins Hospital, died on Jan. 18 at the age of 91. His wife Margery Zierler died two days earlier, on Jan. 16 at the age of 92.

Dr. Zierler served in World War II as surgeon for the 399th Armored Artillery Battalion, 8th Armored Division. In addition to his long and successful career in academic medicine, he was active in social causes for human rights. He also had unusual talent as a woodworker.

Mrs. Zierler brought beauty into the world with her warmth, love and laughter. She loved her family and many friends, her life as a social worker in Baltimore, Md. and her life on the Vineyard in West Tisbury.

Ken was born in Baltimore and lived his life there, and much later also on the Vineyard. On the day after graduation from medical school, he married Margie Shapiro, with whom he lived for over 67 years until her death.

The Zierlers are survived by their children Peggy Rosenthal of Rochester, N.Y., Linda Jucovy of Philadelphia, Pa., Sally Zierler of Providence, R.I., Amy Zierler of Toronto, Ontario, and Michael Zierler of New Paltz, N.Y.; Dr. Zierler’s brother Neal Zierler and the late Josephine Epstein; grandchildren Eric Rosenthal, Timothy Jucovy, Joshua Zierler-Broudo, Maggie Mustard, Rose Mustard, and Sam Zierler; and great-grandchildren Phoebe Rosenthal, Jordan Rosenthal and Caleb Broudo.

There will be a private graveside service. A celebration of their lives will be announced in the spring by the family. Please omit flowers.
