Joyce Vera Watts died peacefully on Thursday evening, Jan. 29 at Windemere.

Joyce was born in England on Dec. 30, 1919 and immigrated to America in 1952 with her husband, John, who predeceased her in March of 2006. Joyce raised her two sons in Cape Elizabeth, Maine, lived in Yarmouth for many years with her son Paul’s family, and moved to the Vineyard with Paul’s family in the early 90s.

Joyce’s greatest loves were her church and her family. Wherever she lived, she was always active in the Episcopal Church. For several years, Joyce volunteered at the Thrift Store on Main street in Vineyard Haven.

In 1997, Joyce moved back to South Portland, Me., to be near her great-grandchildren, her longtime friends, and her “angels” at St. Alban’s Church. In 2003, because of declining health, she returned to the Vineyard.

Joyce is survived by her son Martin and his wife, Carlyn, of Otisfield, Me.; son Paul and his wife, Diane, of Vineyard Haven; grandson Darren Watts and his wife Diane of New York city; granddaughter Joanna Roma, her husband, Troy, and their four children, Trevor, Adelaide, Owen and Noah, all of Portland; granddaughter Kimberly Peaslee, her husband, Clifford, and their daughter Natalie, all of Penacook, N.H.; and granddaughter Jennifer Pillsworth and her husband, Kenneth, of West Tisbury.

Her funeral service will be held on Saturday, Feb. 7 in the Chapman, Cole & Gleason Funeral Home, Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road, Oak Bluffs at 10:30 a.m. officiated by Rev. Dick Fenn.

Interment and memorial service will be held in Cape Elizabeth, Me., in the spring.

Joyce’s family would like to extend sincere thanks to the staff at Windemere for their love and devotion. She was never treated as a patient, but rather a close member of the Windemere family.

Memorial donations may be made in Joyce’s memory to Windemere, P.O. Box 1747, Oak Bluffs, MA 02557.
