Lorraine Bacon Holdsworth died April 11 at Sunrise of McLean, an assisted living community in Virginia, at the age of 83. She hadAlzheimer’s disease.
Mrs. Holdsworth came to the Vineyard for the first time in June 1950 to visit her parents, Cdr. and Mrs. Edward Bacon, at their house, Grey Stone, on Middle Road. She brought their first grandchild with her, age four months. Ray continued to come to the Island every summer for 50 years, until illness prevented her from doing so. She loved to take long walks on the beach and to visit with her many friends. Family and friends from around the world came to stay with her every summer in Chilmark. They enjoyed relaxing on her back porch, with its view of Menemsha Pond and the Elizabeth Islands.
Born in Philadelphia in 1926, she graduated from Mount Vernon College and George Washington University. She made her debut in Washington, D.C., in 1947 and married David BethuneHoldsworth, a commander in the British navy, the following year. He died in 1977, after 27 years of marriage.
Mrs. Holdsworth was a prolific volunteer for historic preservation causes. A past president of the Colonial Dames, she alsoparticipated in the restoration of the Abner Cloud House in Georgetown, Washington, D.C. She was chairman of thelibrary committee of the Board of Lady Visitors to Children’s Hospital and ran the archives at the Potomac School in McLean, Va.
She was a member of the Sulgrave Club and Christ Church Georgetown.
Survivors include three children, Lindesay Aquino of McLean, Kim Holdsworth of St. Thomas, Virgin Islands, and DavidHoldsworth of Lake Forest, Ill.; and six grandchildren. Her interment will be at Abel’s Hill Cemetery next to her husband.
