Edith Rosenberg Eber, of Vineyard Haven, died on June 12, 2009. She was 94.

Edith grew up in New York city, graduated from Barnard College with a bachelor in science in chemistry, and worked for a number of years as a chemist. She played the piano, loved to read, and was an excellent bridge player.

She married Norman Eber, and in 1950 they moved to Deerfield, Mass., where they raised their four children. Norman owned and ran a paper mill in Winchester, N.H. After he died in 1959, Edith moved back to New York but summered on Martha’s Vineyard. In 1970 she moved to the Island full-time.

Edith was elected to the original Martha’s Vineyard Commission for two terms. She then was appointed to the Vineyard Haven planning board where she served from 1978-1990 as a strong voice for conservation. After her retirement the town presented her with an award for her excellent service. And for many years, she was the president of the Martha’s Vineyard League of Women Voters.

Edith Eber is survived by her children Jonathan and his wife, Eileen, of Greenfield, N.H.; her son, Kenneth, and his wife, Alba, of West Tisbury; her daughter Elizabeth of Vail, Colo.; her son, Donald, and his wife, Sharon, of Chilmark, Mass.; four grandchildren, two step-grandchildren, and four great-grandchildren. In addition to her husband, Edith was predeceased by her granddaughter Ellen Wilderman.

There will be a private interment in the fall at the family grave site in Western Massachusetts.
