Longtime seasonal Vineyard resident Gregory P. Knapp of Edgartown and Osprey, Fla., died Friday evening, July 24, at Sarasota Memorial Hospital. He was 66.

Born Dec. 3, 1942, in Teaneck, N.J. to parents Edward and Katherine, Greg attended Saint Cecilia’s High School in Englewood, N.J., where he excelled as a running back, earning the nickname Horse for his incredible speed and power.

Greg attended Wagner College on Staten Island, N.Y., to which he devoted his ardent support both as a student and later in life as a trustee. He was a member of the Delta Nu fraternity. Greg graduated from Wagner in 1966 with a bachelor’s degree in economics and business administration.

Following graduation, Greg accepted a commission in the United States Marine Corps, serving from 1966 to 1969 as a captain and company commander in Viet Nam. He was an avid supporter of the Marine Corps and the armed services throughout his life.

Retired as an investment banker, Greg spent much of his career working in municipal bonds. Starting at A.G. Becker & Co., he served as vice president at Chicago Corp. and W.H. Morton & Co. before becoming a managing director at Dillon, Read & Co. Inc.

To all who knew him, he will be missed and remembered for his leadership, generosity, achievement, patriotism and deep friendship. Said a lifelong friend, “We are privileged to have known him, laughed with him and loved him. He was our friend, and he was yours — and we are the better for it.”

He is survived by his wife, Patricia; their three children, Terrence, Gregory Jr. and Meeghan Athearn; two grandchildren, Clara and Zebadiah Athearn and a sister, Eileen Pagan.
