Anthony Robert (Bob) Duart Sr., a retired police officer of Oak Bluffs, died on Oct. 23 at the Falmouth Hospital after a lengthy illness.

He was the husband of Janice Rego Duart, whom he married in 2000, and the son of Anthony E. Duart and Margaret E. DeCosta Duart. Bob was born in Oak Bluffs on Oct. 23, 1939 and died 70 years later to the day.

He attended the Vineyard Haven schools and soon after high school he enlisted in the U.S. Air Force. He served during the Viet Nam era and attained the rank of airman third class.

After his enlistment he served on the Falmouth police force for a number of years. He returned to the Vineyard in 1970 and worked as a patrolman for Vineyard Haven and then Gay Head. Bob retired from the Oak Bluffs police department in 1999 after serving with them for 20 years. During his employment he received various awards from Mothers Against Drunk Driving for his dedicated work.

Bob was an avid hunter and fisherman. He belonged to the Blue Knights and enjoyed riding his Harley Davidson motorcycle. He was a member of the Portuguese-American Club, the V.F.W., the American Legion, the Oriental-MV Masonic Lodge and the Order of the Redman.

He his survived by his wife, Janice Duart of Oak Bluffs; his two sons, Anthony (Rob) Duart Jr. of Edgartown and Sean Duart of Vineyard Haven; his two daughters, Lisa Darcy of Oak Bluffs and Jennifer Nelson of Edgartown; his three stepchildren, Gordon and Lisa Ponte and Kenny and Erica Ponte, all of Oak Bluffs, and Janet and Ronald Pine of Vineyard Haven; his sister, Ruth Ann Ponte of Oak Bluffs; his grandchildren, Dana and Bryann Darcy, Shelby and Julia Duart, D.J. and Allie Nelson and Mackenzie Duart; his stepgrandchildren, Maia Ponte, Janelle and Jade Pine and Hunter and Shelby Ponte and one soon to be born; and many nieces and nephews.

Visiting hours in the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs were held on Tuesday, with police honors detail and a Masonic funeral service performed that evening.

A graveside service was held in the Sacred Heart Cemetery in Oak Bluffs on Wednesday with military honors provided by the Veterans of Martha’s Vineyard.
