Audrey Jean Wagner Richard of Pease’s Point Way in Edgartown died on Friday, Feb. 5 at the Windemere Nursing and Rehabilitation Center in Oak Bluffs. She was 96. Mrs. Richard was born on Jan. 3, 1914 in West Berlin, Nova Scotia to Sadie Kathleen Hemeon and Claude Stanley Wagner.

She and her family moved to the Island when she was still young. She graduated from the Edgartown High School class of 1933. She was captain of the Edgartown Girl Scouts from 1939 to 1940. She worked a proofreader for the Vineyard Gazette from 1937 to 1940. She was employed at Avery’s store as a clerk and window decorator for 23 years and at Robin Hood’s Barn for two years after that.

Mrs. Richard was married on April 5, 1940, to Edmond J. Richard who predeceased her. They shared 47 years of marriage.

She is survived by many cousins and her close friends Shaun and Lucy Casey, Beverly and Emerson Haslam, Ingrid V. Brown and many other loyal friends. She was also the fourth cousin of Richard Wagner the composer.

A funeral service was held on Tuesday, Feb. 9, at 11 a.m. at the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs with the Rev. Vincent Seadale officiating. Interment followed in the New Westside Cemetery in Edgartown.
