Jared Paul Mayhew died on March 30 at home in Vineyard Haven at the age of 78. He was a friendly and outgoing person who was liked by the people he encountered in his daily routine.
He was born on May 17, 1931, the only son of Dr. Orland S. Mayhew and Esther L. Mayhew. He joined two older sisters Barbara and Priscilla. He attended the Tisbury School and was sent to the Kents Hill School in Maine to complete high school after his father died. There he was involved in sports during his high school years but always listed automobiles as a main interest and his goal was to be an expert at them.
After graduating from Kents Hill in 1950, he worked for the boat line as a dockworker in Vineyard Haven. He enjoyed the people he saw at the job and knew the cars and drivers going on the boat. He joined the army and was sent to Korea during the Korean War. After returning home he went back to work for the Steamship Authority and continued there until his retirement in the late 1990s.
Jared liked working the early shift and always had Thursday as his day off from the dock. He took advantage of the good rate on the boat to drive to Boston each Thursday. One of the cars he drove was a classic Buick. His Jeep seldom went off-Island.
Each Thursday there was a space saved for him at his Boston parking lot. He knew the attendants and they expected him at his usual arrival time. When he sold his last car he used Bonanza Bus to get to Boston. He always sat in the front seat of the bus in order to talk with the driver. He knew all the Bonanza Bus drivers and the regular bus travelers well. He went to Boston for the day as recently as a month before he died and enjoyed the bus ride and his usual table for lunch at Legal Sea Foods.
Jared is survived by five nephews and nieces, David Donald and Tim Donald of Vineyard Haven, Dr. Orland Donald of Mansfield, Conn., Barbara Sumner of Clinton, N.Y., and JoAnn Madigan of Hollywood, Fla.
Arrangements are under the care of the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs. Following cremation a memorial service is being planned for a date and time to be announced.
