Louise M. Norton died at the Henrietta Brewer House on May 2, two days after her 101st birthday. Her longevity was due in no small part to her husband’s vegetable garden until his death in 1985. She arrived on the Vineyard in the early 1930s to work at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital after graduating from St. Luke’s Hospital in New Bedford. She was an active member of the Friends of the Edgartown Council on Aging, Woman’s Club of Martha’s Vineyard, the St. Elizabeth’s Guild, of which she was a founder, and various bridge groups.

She was predeceased by her husband, Philip J. Norton, and her son C. Scott Norton. She is survived by her son Philip J. Norton Jr. and his wife, Jane; grandson Philip J. Norton 3rd and his wife, Shannon, grandson Andrew and his wife, Shelley; great-grandsons Reid, Everett and Andrew; nephew Robert E. Wood 3rd, of Chesire, Conn., and niece Marcia Wordell of Mattapoisett.

A graveside service will be held at New Westside Cemetery in Edgartown on Friday, May 14 at 11 a.m.

In lieu of flowers remembrances may be made to one’s favorite charity.

Arrangements are under the care of the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs.
