Harriet Mixter Isaacs, an Edgartown native, died on April 14 at the Port Chester Nursing Centre in Port Chester, N.Y. She was 95. Born on June 13, 1914, at home, she was the middle child of Carrie Archer Norton and Herbert Webber Mixter of Edgartown. Her sisters, Madeline Mixter Lawson and Dorcas Mixter LePelley predeceased her.

She attended the Edgartown School and in 1933 moved off-Island with a seasonal family to New York. In 1934, she married W. Earl Isaacs, who was born and raised in Oklahoma. They had two daughters and lived in the White Plains, N.Y., area for 35 years. They both retired to Sunrise, Fla., in 1969, and in 1973 her husband died. Harriet remained in Florida until her return to New York in 2000 to be closer to her family.

Each summer, since the early 1930s, Harriet returned to her family home on the West Tisbury Road in Edgartown to enjoy the Island and to visit with her family and friends. She enjoyed riding her red bicycle to the Bend in the Road Beach, visiting the Flying Horses, teaching her children and grandchildren about Island life, and attending yard sales and antique shows with her dear friend Walter Bettencourt.

Harriet was an Edgartown member of the National Society of the Daughters of the American Revolution,a member of the Martha’s Vineyard Museum, and a descendant of John Howland of the Mayflower. An eighth generation resident of the Island, she traced her ancestry to Thomas West, who was a Revolutionary soldier (1775) and died in 1822 in Chilmark.

She was a devoted reader of the Vineyard Gazette and always looked forward to its arrival each week. She also read The New York Times in its entirety each day and enjoyed completing the crossword puzzle. She was an avid letter writer and throughout the years kept in touch with friends and relatives.

She is survived by her two daughters, Barbara Isaacs Strozza and Judith Mixter Isaacs Ament; her four grandchildren, Jeffrey Strozza, Gail Strozza Bisceglia, Lauren Stotz DePalma and Beverly Stotz Levy; eight great-grandchildren, Alan J. Strozza, Bryan J. Strozza, Conner J. Strozza, Christopher J. Bisceglia, Steven J. Bisceglia, Morgan A. Bisceglia, Carrie E. DePalma and Maxwell A. Levy.

She was cremated and interred with her husband in a beautiful mausoleum at the Ferncliff Cemetery in Hartsdale, N.Y., according to her wishes. Going forward, we will keep her spirit alive and share her passion for the Vineyard with our children and grandchildren, and remember our connection to the Island was made possible because of Harriet Mixter Isaacs.
