Irving L. Hunter of Yarmouthport died on June 28 at the Cape Cod Hospital after a brief illness. He was 83.

Born in Plymouth, he moved to Cape Cod and graduated from Barnstable High School. After high school he joined the Army. He worked for the New England Telephone Company for 30 years retiring in December 1989. He was an active member of the United States Power Squadron and commander of the Cape Cod Division in 1980. He was also District 14 commander from 1991 to 1993 and was editor of the first district newsletter, the MA-RI-NER. He was also a member of the Elks, the Moose and the American Legion. He enjoyed his cats, boating, fishing and traveling and loved to tell stories and jokes to his family and friends. He liked piloting small planes and a good game of cribbage or pool.

He is survived by his wife Judy (Landers) Hunter; a sister, Isabel Pendleton; a brother, Paul Hunter; three daughters, Karen, Barbara and Patricia, and many nieces and nephews. He was predeceased by his brother David Hunter.

Friends and relatives are invited to visiting hours on Saturday, July 10 from 11 a.m. to 1 p.m. at the Hallett Funeral Home in South Yarmouth. A graveside service will be held at 1:30 p.m. Saturday in Ancient Cemetery in Yarmouthport.
