Madeline T. (Costa) Marden, 81, of Falmouth, formerly of Vineyard Haven, died at the Falmouth Hospital on July 12 after a long illness. She was the wife of Willard Marden Sr. and the late Augustine Maseda, who died in 1979.

When she was a toddler, she moved to the Vineyard and was raised in Vineyard Haven. She attended school in Tisbury and graduated from Tisbury High School. While in high school, she was an excellent student and a cheerleader. Her sister was on the basketball team and she cheered her on. In 1960 she moved to Falmouth and worked for many years in the cafeteria in Falmouth Public Schools. She also worked in home health care until she retired. Fishing, the beach, crossword puzzles, knitting, traveling and Disney World were things that she enjoyed, but she mostly enjoyed being with her family and would often make ceramics for them.

In addition to her husband, she is survived by her children, Robert Maseda of Yarmouth, Deborah Conley of Falmouth and Julie Marden of Ryegate, Vt; a sister, Irene Baugh of Oak Bluffs; a stepson, Willard Marden Jr. of Oak Bluffs; 11 grandchildren; 10 great-grandchildren; and many nieces and nephews. She is the mother of the late Kenneth Maseda, who died in 1983.

Visiting hours were held on July 15 in Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs. A funeral mass will be celebrated at 11 a.m. on Friday, July 16, at St. Augustine’s Church in Vineyard Haven, followed by interment at the Oak Grove Cemetery in Vineyard Haven.
