Margaret Sharpe Stevens Clark of Haverhill, formerly of Wellesley and Dover, died Nov. 10, 2009. She was 88.

Peggy, as she was known by her friends, lived a long and active life. She graduated from the Baldwin School in Philadelphia, Pa., and attended the Boston Conservatory of Music. She volunteered with numerous organizations and taught young children the wonders of growing peanuts and other garden delights. As an athlete, she met her late husband Eben Choate Clark on a baseball diamond in a friendly pickup game. Eben introduced Peggy to skiing and golf, and there was no stopping her; she became known as a golf champion among her friends. Though Peggy downplayed her golfing successes, her family loved to brag about her 17 championship wins at the Edgartown Golf Club and her 1980 Seniors WGAM first place title. Peggy encouraged her children to lead an honest, no-frills lifestyle with much attention given to conservation. The site of her former Wellesley Hills residence is now a town park where townspeople can enjoy the seasonal wonders of Rockridge Pond and its abundant wildlife.

She raised five children, Eben C. Clark Jr., Margaret Clark Towle, Elizabeth Blake Clark, Catharine Clark Hayes and the late Richard Sharpe Clark. She is also survived by 11 grandchildren, six great-grandchildren, and several nieces and nephews.

In lieu of flowers, donations may be made to the Massachusetts Society for the Prevention of Cruelty to Children.
