Mary Janette Goodick Plante died on August 8 in Manville, R.I. She was born in Sandy Point, N.S., in 1910, and came to Edgartown in 1921 with her parents, Ernest and Susan Goodick, and siblings, Ella Lee (Oliver) and Bobby, to a home her parents built on Upper Main street.
Jan moved from the Island in early adulthood, but kept Martha’s Vineyard close to her heart, and frequently visited her family here as long as she was able. She loved the ocean, and often strolled the beaches looking for beach glass.
Although totally blind for the last several years she was of keen mind, and interested in current events — taking part in news discussion activities at The Holiday in Manville where she resided.
Jan was recently honored to be a participant in the Rhode Island governor’s annual centenarian’s brunch for Rhode Island residents in their 100th year.
She was predeceased by her husband, Albert, of Pawtucket, R.I. on August 8, 1999. She is survived by a daughter, Norma Dator of Victoria, B.C.; three grandchildren, Nanci Dator of Vineyard Haven, Jayne Freeman of Sasebo, Japan, and Jack Dator of Assonet; and four great-grandchildren. She also leaves nieces Judith Richard Paltrineri of Bristol R.I., and Wendy Rose, Maggie Bernard and grand-niece Susan Schwoch, all of Oak Bluffs.
Arrangements are private. In her memory, contributions to the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital or Pakistan Flood Relief are appreciated.
