Phil Robinson Jr. died suddenly on Jan. 8 at the Waterbury Hospital in Waterbury, Conn. He was 89.
He was born in Ocala, Fla., on Dec. 20, 1921. He attended grammar school in Naugatuck, Conn., where he grew up. He graduated from the Wooster School in Danbury, Conn., in 1939. He matriculated at Princeton University and graduated from Tufts University in 1947 with a bachelor of arts degree in economics. In the interim, he served in the United States Army Air Corps, specializing in meteorology, in the Sudan, Ethiopia, Iraq and the Pacific during World War II.
After the war, he worked for Eastern Malleable Iron in Naugatuck and Waterbury Farrell. From 1960 until his retirement in 2000, he worked as an advertising representative for Thomas Publishing Company. He also founded and owned GOSH Electronics and Robitec Electronics, of New Britain and Cheshire respectively, for years.
In his spare time, he was an avid fly-fisherman, snow skier, a voracious reader and an engaging storyteller. He was a member of the 70-Plus Ski Club and the Zipfelberger Ski Club, where he met his wife of 56 years. He was also a member of the Mayflower Society, Delta Tau Delta Fraternity, and served as president and treasurer of the Southern Connecticut Business Professional Advertising Association. He also served on the Region 15 school board, was a justice of the peace, a member of the Naugatuck Rotary Club, and served on the Vestry at St. George’s Episcopal Church in Middlebury.
He is survived by his wife, Gwen, of Middlebury, Conn.; sons, Mark of Middlebury and Scott of Oak Bluffs; and his favorite granddog, Poobah. He was very loved in life and is very loved now.
A funeral was held on Thursday, Jan. 13 in Naugatuck. Interment was in Grove Cemetery in Naugatuck, with full military honors.
