William V. Lidgerwood, 93, of Chilmark died March 9, 2011 at Massachusetts General Hospital in Boston of complications due to double pneumonia.

Born in Morristown, N.J. in the old family home, “Speedwell,” Bill graduated from the Brooks School and Harvard University.

He was a lieutenant in the US Army in World War II in Patton’s Third Army Tank Division and received discharge at Camp Hood in Texas.

His business career started in Geneva, Switzerland with ALCAN and then in New York city. He retired in 1965.

In 1965 Bill married Harriet Barney King of Farmington, Conn., a widow with five children: John King Jr., now deceased; James and his life companion, Joann Lawson; Austin and his wife, Beth, and their children, Virginia Bellot and daughter Kate and Katherine King of California. Their mother, his wife Harriet, died after a long illness in 2002. She leaves her sister Katherine Garfield. He leaves two daughters from his first marriage, Graem Dayton and her husband, Lee, of Naples, Fla., and Andrea diBagno and her husband, Alex, of Houston, Tex., and their two very special daughters, Alexandra and Arabella.

Bill has always kept in touch with his family and they with him, as well with his many old friends. In 2003 Bill renewed his connection with a girl he met on a cruise to Bermuda in 1939. Now a widow in her 80s with four children, he married Elizabeth Eddy in June of 2003. Thus began an amalgamation of two whole families and a very happy and fun marriage that had its beginning so long ago.

He now leaves Onnie and Andrew Palmer and their two sons Anthony and Luke, Luke now deceased, William and Eileen Eddy and Bill’s son Sam, and daughter Eliza, her husband Timothy Schaub and daughters, Claire and Audrey and Eileen’s children, Elizabeth and Patrick Schule; Lisa and husband Peter White and son Beach; Susan and daughters Dinah and Marcella Andrews and Dinah’s son Dominick d’Assis, a great grandson.

Bill also leaves Stephen Fischer and Paul Sutherland, close members of the Eddy clan living on the farm.

Bill was also a member of the First Congregational Church of West Tisbury and a generous supporter of several charitable organizations.

He was generous, kind, loving and an elegant man with many interests who is greatly missed.

Bill had a sister Jean, now deceased, who had two children, Lyman and Irene Gilbert.

A family service is planned at Abel’s Hill this summer.
