Mary (Malawka) Butynski of Edgartown died on Monday, April 4, at Windemere Nursing Home. She was 97.

Mary was born in Brighton and lived most of her life in Salem. She was graduated from the Salem High School and worked for 30 years at Almy’s Department Store. She was a parishioner of St. Nicholas Russian Orthodox Church in Salem.

Mary married Joseph Butynski while he was on leave from the Army during World War II in 1943. He died in 1994.

Mary enjoyed knitting and volunteering her time for charity.

She is survived by her son John (Jack) Butynski and his wife, Diana Look Butynski, of Edgartown; her grandchildren, Lucas and Seth, both of Edgartown, and Kaitlyn of Sterling, Va. Besides her husband she was preceded in death by her parents, Joseph and Anna Malawka and her brothers, Paul and John Malawka.

Her memorial service will be held in the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home, Edgartown-Vineyard Haven Road, Oak Bluffs, officiated by Rev. Chip Seadale on Monday, April 18 at 7 p.m. A visitation will be held one hour prior to the service, starting at 6 p.m. Her cremated remains will be interred in the Greenlawn Cemetery, Salem.
