Elizabeth T. (Betty) Silva, a longtime resident of Edgartown, died on Saturday, April 9 at the age of 101.
She was married to Antone M. Silva Jr. who predeceased her in 1992. Betty was born on June 13, 1909 in Westfield and lived briefly in Bridgeport, Conn., before moving to Martha’s Vineyard in 1927. She was the daughter of Joseph T. and Tesy Vargo.
Betty worked as a housekeeper for various residences throughout the Island and some business locations including Martha’s Vineyard Insurance and the Country Store.
She had a fondness for fishing and bowling and was on the bowling team of the High Hope Girls; she was also a member of the former Moose Lodge.
She is survived by her devoted son, Antone M. Silva 3rd and his wife, Dianne, of West Tisbury; five grandchildren, Desiree Silva, Lena Saunders, Manuel Nunes, April Mongillo and Theresa Nunes; seven great-grandchildren and three great-great-grandchildren. She was predeceased by her daughter, Maria Nunes.
Her funeral service will be private. Donations in her memory may be made to the Sol Amor Hospice, 123 Waterhouse Road, Suite #5, Bourne, MA 02532 or to a charity of one’s choice.
Arrangements are under the care of the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs.
