Leila May Whynock Sequeira died on March 28 at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital.

Born Leila May Whynock on Feb. 27, 1928, in Brockton, she was the child of Charles J. Whynock and Elsie Whitten Whynock of Brockton. She married Albert A. Sequeira at the Seamen’s Bethel church in New Bedford.

Leila was a devoted friend and neighbor to all she encountered. She accomplished her goal of obtaining her GED in 1981 and followed that with her medical training in 1987 to become a certified nursing assistant in the years following. Her working years were spent at the Martha’s Vineyard Hospital as a housekeeper. This was followed by managing stores on Martha’s Vineyard and in Falmouth. Finally, she provided private care for residents of the Vineyard and completed her career as a CNA working for Falmouth Nursing Home. She worked for approximately 25 years as a CNA and also studied two years of licensed practical nursing.

In 2005 she returned to the Vineyard and resided at Island Elderly Housing’s Aidylberg Apartments. At the time of her death she was a resident at the Windemere Nursing and Rehabilitation Center after a stroke in 2010, where she received assistance and care from staff and family members. She will always be loved and greatly missed.

Her nine children survive her: Albert, Robert, James, David, Leila, Laura, Edith, Flora Frost and Marie Neilsen, as well as her 16 grandchildren and six great-grandchildren.

Services were held on April 2 at Our Lady Star of the Sea Church in Oak Bluffs. Interment will be in Melrose Cemetery in Brockton with her mother, Elsie Whitten Whynock.

Arrangements are under the care of the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs.
