Dr. Edmund O. Rothschild died on March 16, surrounded by his family.
A lifelong New York city resident, Ed graduated from the Bronx Science High School, New York University and Cornell Medical School.
He had a lengthy and full career as a physician, researcher and administrator in many New York city institutions including Memorial Sloan Kettering, New York City Health and Hospitals Corporation, Queens Hospital, St. Luke’s Roosevelt Hospital, St. Joseph’s Hospital, and, most recently at National Recovery Institute. He served on many volunteer boards including NYCHHC, NYCDOH Lead Poisoning Advisory Committee, and NYS Office of Professional Medical Conduct. He was an Honorary New York city police surgeon and honorary medical officer of NYCFD. Ed was a loyal community supporter and activist. On City Island, he was actively involved with the Temple Beth-El and PS 175.
Ed first fell in love with Martha’s Vineyard in 1962 and spent every summer since then fishing from his boat in Menemsha, passing time on Squid Row, learning to lobster, wrangling cows on Middle Road, frequenting any and all yard sales, and always hard at work on seemingly endless projects in his Chilmark barn. Known as Doc down at Dutcher Dock, Ed became a part of the community and developed many lifelong friendships. Ed loved his two Islands, he loved the ocean, and, more than anything, he loved his family and his friends. He will remain a huge part of us forever.
He was the beloved husband of Kathy Lonergan; devoted father of Emily, Sarah, Anna, Oliver, and the late Joshua and Adam; loving brother of Charles; father in law of Josh and Tara.
Donations in Ed’s honor can be made to the PS 175 Ed Rothschild Fund for Substance Abuse Education and Scholarship, PS 175, 200 City Island avenue, City Island, NY 10464.
