Anne Fletcher Haughton, a resident of Palm Harbor, Fla., and East Pasture, Aquinnah, died Oct. 2. She was 85.

Anne was born on May 18, 1926, in Detroit, Mich., the daughter of Cara Van Campen and Charles Henry Fletcher. She spent her childhood summers at her grandmother’s home on Nantucket. She went on to play field hockey at Briarcliff Manor and work in New York city, before returning to Detroit to marry and raise her family.

Anne and her husband, Ronald W. Haughton, were married 53 years and spent most of their years as residents of Grosse Pointe, Mich. Ron predeceased her in 2005. Anne managed her husband’s arbitration business and typed most of the over 4,000 cases that he decided. Anne, Ron and their four children first visited Gay Head, (Aquinnah,) in 1965, at the invitation of Saul Wallen. The Haughton family have been enjoying Aquinnah ever since. They built a home on Lighthouse Road in 1976, and then moved to Lobsterville Road where the family still owns a home, called Rockspring, after the Haughton family farm in Ireland.

In her, “spare time,” Anne could be found at the beach with Flavia Stutz, playing golf at Farm Neck, discussing politics, gardening or playing tennis. The Haughtons and several other Aquinnah families engaged in a friendly annual Labor Day family tennis tournament on Bob and Flavia Stutz’s tennis court thanks to Anne’s love of tennis and her organizing skills. Anne’s skills were evident in her youth as she was the Under 14 Girl State of Michigan tennis champion in her day. She played golf into her 70s and was especially proud of making two holes in one during a one-month period.

Anne played a key role, including serving as its president for a few years, on the Gay Head Taxpayers’ Association as it worked through the settlement between the town and the Wampanoag Tribe. She was determined to help find a resolution that would be satisfying to all. She demonstrated incredible patience and listening skills during the process, as she showed time and again on the many boards she served.

Throughout her years she volunteered for a variety of nonprofit organizations. Usually she served as secretary or treasurer or both. Some of the groups she belonged to were the Episcopal Church, Junior League of Detroit, Planned Parenthood and she was a 72-year member of the Sigma Gamma Association of Detroit. In her later years she volunteered to prepare income tax forms for the AARP in the library. She said it kept her brain active. On the Vineyard she enjoyed getting to know her neighbors while involved with the Clay Pit Road Association.

Her long summers on the Vineyard were treasured. She enjoyed her many Vineyard friends and saw many of them off-Island. They included Bob and Flavia Stutz, Alvin and Terry Lane, Alex and Mary Preston, Arnold and Norma Zack, Bobby and Dave Ivry, Selma and Bill Greenberg, and Moe and Hannah Malkin.

While living at Rockspring, Anne enjoyed entertaining friends and family. There were many evenings of cocktail parties and bluefish dinners. She played a great game of bridge and enjoyed a quiet game of cribbage with Ron while looking at their Vineyard Sound view. Many happy memories were created there with her children and 13 grandchildren. There was always a parade of family and friends during the summer months.

Anne will be missed by her friends and family. She is survived by three daughters, Jan Tracy and her husband Tom of Safety, Harbor, Fla., Patty Haughton of Wilmington, Del., and Leslie Zemsky and her husband Howard of Buffalo, N.Y; one son, John Haughton and his wife Jennifer of Severna Park, Md.; and 13 grandchildren. Additionally, she is survived by her sister, Louise Pierce. Her brother, Charles (Chuck) Fletcher, predeceased her by 46 hours.

A celebration of her life will be held next summer in Aquinnah. Memorials may be made to the Aquinnah/Gay Head Community Association, P.O. Box 494, Chilmark, MA, 02535, or to a charity of your choice.
