Andreé Leon Carter of Vineyard Haven died on Saturday, Jan. 14, at home. He was 65.
Andreé was the only child of Winfrey and Lorena (Pollard) Carter and was born in Washington, D.C., on July 29, 1946.
He lived in D.C. until he was 14 and moved to Boston. He had lived on the Vineyard since 1975.
He worked for the Southern House Catering Service Hotel and Bill’s Tulsa in Boston. He was a post-doc at Scripps Clinic in Torrey Pines, Calif., and later worked as a lab technician for Harvard Medical School. In his later years on the Vineyard he was a CDL driver for the town of Tisbury and also a driver and cashier for the Martha’s Vineyard Regional Refuse District.
He is survived by his former wife and caregiver, Shelley E. Carter; his daughters, Vernetta Cheek, Nicole Ferguson Matthews and Camille Carter; and his grandsons, Kurtis Troy Small Jr. , James C. Perez, Elijah K. Matthews Gregory Cheek and Richard Cheek; and grandaughters Tiara Jazmine Lee and Brooklynn Petersen.
Visiting hours were held on Wednesday in the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs; a service was held in the Funeral Home on Thursday, officiated by the Rev. Dr. Roger Spinney. Interment was in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Vineyard Haven.
