Marion Baker Morton of Oak Bluffs died on May 10, peacefully in her sleep, under the care of the kind staff at the Henrietta Brewer House. She would have been 103 years of age in November and had often said, “don’t ever get old.”

She was predeceased by her dear husband, Ben, in 1982, after 45 years of happy marriage.

Marion was born to Edward D. Baker and Sally (Shaw) Baker in New Bedford. She graduated from high school there in 1927 and attended Simmons College. Later she returned home and became a member of the South Dartmouth Congregational Church.

Marion and her high school sweetheart, Ben, were married in 1937. He had served in the U.S. Navy during World War II and then returned to work for the New England Steamship Co. Soon, he was transferred to Martha’s Vineyard and the couple bought a home in Oak Bluffs. Ben became the first director of the Martha’s Vineyard Chamber of Commerce.

Marion first was employed as a bookkeeper to the market of Irving Kligler in Oak Bluffs. However, she is best remembered as a teller and branch manager at the Martha’s Vineyard National Bank in Oak Bluffs, for many years.

She was an active member of the hospital auxiliary, accumulating 600 volunteer hours. She coordinated contributions to the Tree of Lights and was a founding member of the Library Friends of Oak Bluffs. She was also a member of the Trinity Methodist Church, serving as treasurer and active in the United Methodist Women group.

She often spoke of and was proud of her grandfather, Capt. Joshua Gage Baker, a whaling master who later retired and returned to his home in Padanaram village in South Dartmouth, where he remained active in town affairs.

Marion was a true lady with strong beliefs. She always had a smile and proper reply and greeting. Marion had no children but enjoyed many strong friendships from those of all generations. Those closest to her, over the years and until the end, were her neighbors Betty Daniels, Barbara Hoyle and Bob Murphy.

A graveside service will be held on Monday, May 21, at 11 a.m. in the Oak Grove Cemetery in Oak Bluffs.

Contributions in Marion’s memory may be made to the United Methodist Church of Martha’s Vineyard, P.O. Box 1205, Oak Bluffs, MA 02557.

Arrangements are under the care of the Chapman, Cole and Gleason Funeral Home in Oak Bluffs.
