While Gray Mac W. Bryan Jr. may have died on Dec. 29 at Martha’s Vineyard Hospital, his spirit did not. After all, he died just as the sun was rising. Any person fortunate enough to know him would undoubtedly say that Gray Bryan lived his 85 years to the fullest. And that to have known him in whatever capacity was a blessing of no small scale.

A prolific sportsman, a member of the New York Stock Exchange, a steadfast environmentalist, a husband, father, brother, uncle, cousin and a constant friend,

Gray was a man who simply embodied a set of values and a passion for life that drew us all to him like moths to a flame. It is no surprise that this Island could entice such a man and his family to live here for over 30 years. Nor is it a surprise that this man and this Island could bring out the very best in each other.

He is survived by Nell Bryan of Edgartown, their children and grandchildren who will continually celebrate life just as he would have wanted. There will be a memorial service at St. Andrew’s Church in late June. A formal announcement will be made once plans have been solidified. In lieu of flowers please make a contribution to a cause that is important to you. Be it money, time, commitment or helping hand, know that your contribution is what gives life to the legacy that Gray Bryan most certainly left behind. Just as each sunrise gives life to the spirit of our days.
