Curtis E. Boyd died on Dec. 18. He was 81.
Curtis was the son of Ralph and Emma (Wood) Boyd. Born in Oak Bluffs, and growing up in Edgartown, he attended the Edgartown School. Upon graduation from Edgartown High School, he attended Norwich University.
He married Margaret E. Teller on Dec. 29, 1951 prior to joining the Army. He joined the Army in January 1952. He served in Korea with the 7th Recon Company, 7th infantry division. He was discharged with the rank of sergeant.
He worked for many years at the Edgartown Hardware store, where he started a very successful plumbing and heating department. He also worked as executive director of the Edgartown Boys’ Club, where his father had also been director. Many remember the dances that were open to all Island teenagers. One of his fondest memories as director of the Boys’ Club was the formation of the Drum and Bugle Corps. He always said this was the one thing the club could give back to the town and its supporters. He was forever grateful to the American Legion Post 186 for sponsoring this.
In 1965 he and Walter Smith joined forces and became Boyd and Smith Plumbing and Heating. Some years later, the partnership dissolved. Then came Boyd and Sons Plumbing and Heating, with both sons working in the trade along with their father.
Curtis retired from plumbing in 1990. He then worked alongside his wife in the crafts business. He said he never worked so hard. He did the woodwork and she did the painting. They traveled doing shows all over New England, plus New York, New Jersey and even Maryland.
He leaves his wife, Margaret, and sons Richard and Michael. He is also survived by one daughter, Patricia. All of his children reside on the Vineyard. He leaves grandchildren Heather and Scott Boyd of Oregon; Melissa and Emma Boyd of Edgartown; Kayla Boyd and Riley Jackson of Florida, and great grandchildren Zachary Fullin and Kayleigh Boyd, both of Martha’s Vineyard. He also leaves nephews James and Terry Boyd and their families.
Donations may be made in his memory to the Boys’ and Girls’ Club, P.O. Box 654, Edgartown, MA 02539; Vineyard Nursing Association, P.O. Box 399 or Hope Health, P.O. Box 4188, both in Vineyard Haven, MA 02568.
