Mary Jane Hart Clark of Kent, Conn., died at her home in Kent on March 26. She was 91.

Mary was born Sept 26, 1921, in New Britain, Conn., the only daughter of the late Donald and Elise Hart. Educated at Mills College in California, Mary traveled extensively here and abroad. She was married to the late Robert Keys Clark and moved to Kent in 1960. She loved spending time in her vegetable garden and was an avid reader. Mary was fluent in French and Spanish, and taught herself Russian and Italian with her brother Pete (Don). In addition, she was literate in both Greek and Latin. She belonged to book groups and enjoyed horseback riding, and was frequently seen on her horse along Route 7. A faithful member of St. Andrew’s Church, she sang every Sunday in the choir and helped organize the annual Christmas Bazaar and other fundraisers.

Mary was particularly fond of dachsunds in her childhood, and boxers later on, and told many humorous tales about each of them. She was a lifetime summer resident in her beloved Oak Bluffs, spending much of her time at the Crow’s Nest family compound in Hart Haven as well as up-Island in Chilmark. Well into her eighties, she was frequently spotted on her bicycle in Kent and was affectionately known as The Bicycle Lady.

She is survived by three children: Alexis Clark of New York, N.Y., Diana H. Clark of Sharon, Conn. and Portia Allen of Washington, N.J. She is also survived by five grandchildren. She was predeceased by her brothers: Donald Richards Hart Jr., David Livingston Hart and Henry Russell Hart, all of whom were World War II veterans.

A memorial service celebrating her life will be held Saturday, May 4, at 11 a.m., at St. Andrew’s Church in Kent. In lieu of flowers, the family is requesting that donations be made to The Memorial Fund, St. Andrew’s Church. There will be a reception following the service in the Parish Hall.
