Jeanne E. Feeney of Vineyard Haven and Sharon died at home on Oct. 13 with her family by her side. Jeanne was 90 years old. She was the devoted wife of Charles J. Feeney for 62 years, who predeceased her in 2011.

The daughter of Fred and Elizabeth Schnieders, Jeanne was born on Jan. 25, 1923 in Cincinnati, Ohio. Her sweetest childhood memories were of days she spent with her grandmother and mentor, Jesse Schnieders. Over the years, she and her grandmother wrote each other constantly and Jeanne kept and cherished those letters all her life. Her family, including her younger brother Ray, moved to Milwaukee, Wis., in 1940 where she completed high school. She loved swing bands and was known to stay out late for the last dance.

In 1948 Jeanne was swept off her feet by Charles (Chuck) Feeney, a newly discharged marine from Boston. In 1949 they were married and they settled in Walpole. Together they raised five children in a small ranch house. Charles built a sailboat in the back yard called the Whispering Winds, and when they found time they enjoyed sailing around the Elizabeth Islands and Martha’s Vineyard.

In 1960 they moved to Sharon and renovated a large home on Lake Massapoag. Besides raising five children, Jeanne spent many days tirelessly working on their new home. In 1968 they purchased the first of two lots on Martha’s Vineyard where together, with family, they built the Martha’s Vineyard Family Campground. Jeanne co-managed the campground with Chuck for 20 years and her dedication and hospitality was unforgettable to all who met her.

She spent her retirement years going on adventures with Chuck, sailing and traveling the world. She loved to send everyone postcards from wherever they traveled to. She also loved gardening, especially flowers, and this led to a long relationship with the Sharon Garden Club. She rose to become president and a life member. She spent her last days in the home she loved, with her family and her devoted caregivers, feeding the birds, and watching the Lawrence Welk Show. She will be remembered as a devoted wife who worked tirelessly to help her family. She never complained and gave others the credit. She was always a lady and forever she smiled.

She was also predeceased by her brother Ray in 2008 and leaves behind three sons, Dan Feeney of Vineyard Haven, Jim Feeney of Harwich Port, Tom Feeney of Falmouth, Me.; two daughters, Sue O’Rourke of Vineyard Haven, Judy Shapiro and her husband Carl of Foxboro; and nine grandchildren, Brendan, Megan, Bryan and Colin Feeney, Christian Feeney, Michael and Meaghan O’Rourke, and Cory and Lindsay Shapiro. Her sister in law Barbara Feeney Powers lives in Prescott, Ariz.

Interment was held at the Rock Ridge Cemetery in Sharon on Oct. 18.

A private gathering was held at the family home afterward.
