James (Jack) Carl Dario Jr. of Oak Bluffs and Delray Beach, Fla., died Nov. 8 at the Boca Raton Regional Hospital in Florida. He was 69.  

Jack, a longtime Island resident and businessman, moved to Martha’s Vineyard in 1977, where he was an active voice in both the Tisbury and Oak Bluffs business communities. For many years he was the proprietor of what was then the Texaco and Mobil gas stations in Vineyard Haven, and later as principal owner of Island Transport, a bus company in Oak Bluffs. 

Jack enjoyed the company of good friends, whether it was on the golf courses of Florida, at Seasons Restaurant’s karaoke nights or at home, cooking and sharing gourmet meals. He was an enthusiastic supporter of the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School football program, especially during those years when his sons were members of the team. 

In the early 1980s, proposition two and a half threatened elimination of a number of athletic programs from the Martha’s Vineyard Regional High School Budget.  Jack volunteered to serve as the school’s athletic director, and through his fundraising efforts all the sports programs were kept intact.  

Jack loved the Vineyard, and donated transportation in support of many Island community events.

He is survived by his two sons, Jim Dario and his wife Kerry of Wellesley and Scott Dario of Oak Bluffs; six grandchildren, Jack, Will, Ben and Kate Dario of Wellesley and Lindsy and Spencer Dario of Oak Bluffs; his former wife, Nancy Greco of Boca Raton, Fla.; and his sisters, Deanne Sferrino of Burlington and Donna Dario of North Reading.

Jack received wonderful home care from the Vineyard Nursing Association, and in lieu of flowers, his family requests that donations be made in his name to the Vineyard Nursing Association, 455 State Road, P.M.B. 312, Vineyard Haven, MA 02568
